If you are approaching a major age milestone ….( such as 21 in my case (!)) you’ll find yourself creating a mental bucketlist of things to achieve before reaching it. Infact, I’m always adding things to my bucketlist.
Now, I’m not one for skydiving or bunjee jumping…(infact I haven’t even been able to tackle the Jumeirah Sceirah at Wild Wadi yet!) My list is far less drastic and more subtle. Some of these items include attending a Ted Talk, finally mustering up the courage to enroll in that French/Salsa class, making a convincing shisha smoke ring and finding out the mystery of how to successfully skim a pebble across a lake.
Another item on the ever-growing list is having a go at rolling a ……
SUSHI roll!!!!! (why?! what did you THINK I was going to say??)
Needless to say, I was psyched about attending Vogue Cafe’s sushi making masterclass. Our rolls were not only prepared and taught to us by master chefs, but they turned out so fancy and gorgeous. I’m not sure how authentically Japanese the decorations fare, but they sure do LOOK pretty!
It was crazy fun! Let me explain how it works. First I took a snowball of sake/mirin infused sticky rice and spread it on the dull side of the nori sheet.
Then I squelched (technical term) a generous amount Kewpie mayo across and stuffed the rolls with plennnnty of tempura king prawn.
The best bit, though, was dusting it with special edible gold dust and topping it with these pansies!
You know what else was awesome? Every time someone would make a batch, the generous souls would pass the plate along and we’d get to try loads of different varieties until we literally reached our button pop threshold. Wonderful day!
Speaking of food – luxury Swiss chocolatiers, Sprungli recently opened up their boutique on Jumeirah Beach Road this week and they had an open day which was free to the public for sampling some of their famous desserts.
It was like a scene from that movie Chocolat (except sadly, there was no Johnny Depp!) Thats ok, though. Their Luxemburgerli macaroons did an equally good job creating that warm, loving, fuzzy feeling instead.
Guests were even invited to sample the chocolate fountain by dunking strawberries and wafers in it. If you haven’t visited Sprungli yet, I urge you to hightail it over there pronto.
Regarding all this everything-in-moderation malarky; I had every intention of saving this decadent splurge for a rainy day buuuuuuuuut…what the heck.
I’m sure it’s raining somewhere.
