Creating my Aqua Apartment

So, it’s no secret that I’ve always loved shades of aqua. It’s just so soothing and feminine. I’ve never really gotten into decorating or interior design before but once I moved into a new apartment – I considered it a fresh canvas for my dream beach house. It took me quite a few months to get the look I wanted and in that time I’ve collected a few tips and hacks that I wanted to share with you guys.

Before I went overboard with my purchases and decorating the house, I scoured Pintrest and magazines for inspiration and some kind of a plan. What I fancied was a look that was beachy in a New England kind of way with distressed furniture, cozy textures( macrame /fringing) a soothing and refreshing color palette and lots of nautical objects tastefully scattered around.

As well as this, I also wanted it to look feminine (sorry, husband … no depressing man caves allowed) It was important to incorporate my own fashion illustrations and arty touches so I looked at the chic and luxurious home of Megan Hess for inspiration. A combination of feminine, beachy and chic is what I was after! Here’s a few reference photos to see my thought process.

So this is what my apartment looked like before. It’s not bad – but to me, it felt too masculine, impersonal and hotel-like. Meh.

I noticed we had lots of modern, dark furniture so my MAIN source of inspiration was the photo below. This living room idea would work perfectly with my current furniture therefore this interpretation was really practical.

So the next step was to change the burgundy chairs to turquoise – my accent color that would set the entire mood. I did something a little crazy and veeeeeery time consuming – instead of reupholstering the chairs, I painted on top of the fabric with a special chalk paint. Yes! You can actually DO this and it works! You can find a very detailed tutorial over here.

Be warned – it is VERY labour intensive!!! It took me a week with lots of mess but here is how the chairs turned out. I also painted and distressed a cute little bookshelf.

This was my inspiration and this photo has some great tips on how to style a bookshelf. Takes a bit of time but it looks so stylish in the end. Also – keep an eye out for cool accessories – especially bookends! I found my elegant agate ones from ebay.

Next, I stacked my favorite arty books on the coffee table and added some little quirky touches. This photo is great on explaining how to style a table.

Lastly, I added some finishing touches and accents. I stenciled the lampshade and painted a few of my fashion illustrations onto linen cushion covers. I threw in some shells, matte glass bottles, candles, lanterns and my favorite paintings and prints.
